In the Garden

I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses.

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

He speaks, and the sound of His voice,
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing.

I’d stay in the garden with Him
Though the night around me be falling,
But He bids me go; through the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling.

-Charles Austin Miles, 1912

This is one of my favorite hymns. I distinctly remember having one of those sing-a-long books with the sticker buttons you press to hear the cheesy polyphonic songs (in this case, hymns). And this was my favorite one. I love how hymns become more and more significant the older we get and the more we mature in our faith. That last verse is so beautiful. Love love it.

  1. I am looking forward to hearing more of your take on this hymn. Did you know that it's Grandma Comfort's favorite? She has always said that she wants it sung at her funeral. And actually we just sang it at our women's bible study a couple of weeks ago. Love you lots, dear one. So glad you can appreciate even the "old" tunes of the church!
